Riding my bike to work this morning as I do many days I began thinking of this idea of “passive exercise”. Quite obviously not passive in terms of inactivity, but passive in terms of getting exercise into your day without really considering it a “work out”.
Countless people associate exercise as an exhausting activity that is actually dreaded instead of anticipated. Although happen to be one of those people who craves physical fitness and work outs, I also appreciate the freedom of not being a slave to the gym. I look forward to riding my bike to work as often as I can. I get to be outside, fresh breeze on my face. I avoid dark underground trains, overcrowded with morning commuters. Also and nice plus, riding a bike is good for the environment!
Because I am using my bike as a means of transportation I associate it as such and do not think, “UGH I have to go out and ride to build muscle and burn calories.” Even though I’m not thinking this, I am in turn actually doing those things!
This can be applied so easily to many parts of our lives. Go out dancing with your friends. It’s amazing exercise that is too much fun to be considered work! Take long walks. Walking is one of the best activities for our bodies, with low impact physical fitness as well as some meditative silence if done solo. Walk to the store, ride your bike to work or class. Skip, jog, dance, whatever gets that beautiful body moving!
Get out there and move your body in any way possible. Don’t think of it as exercise, just know it as living! You will reap the same benefits without stressing the mind or sacrificing your extra time. ♥
